Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, August 27) – Filipino swimmer Ernie Gawilan failed to clinch a slot in the Tokyo Paralympics men's 200-meter individual medley SM7 finals.

Gawilan was one spot away from securing a berth in the medal race after landing a ninth place finish overall in the preliminary heats on Friday morning at the Tokyo Aquatics Centre.

Only the top eight swimmers in the preliminaries, out of the 11 tankers in the field, progressed into the finals.

The 30-year-old Filipino para-swimmer recorded a time of two minutes and 50.49 seconds to place fifth in Heat 1 of the preliminaries.

The Davao-born swimmer's time was eight seconds slower than eighth placer Pipo Carlomagno of Argentina, who finished with a time of two minutes and 42.43 seconds.

Gawilan will still compete in the 400-meter freestyle S7 event on Aug. 29 and 100-meter backstroke competition on Aug. 30.
