Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, September 9) -- Cyber company Kapersky urged Filipinos to install security solutions in their everyday devices to have a "safety net" against data breaches.

Siang Tion Yeo, the firm's Southeast Asian section general manager, said 97 percent of Filipinos surveyed are aware of online threats but only 21 percent actually download security solutions.

"Awareness is already there. What is left is to translate this awareness into action. That is making sure you have the protection, security solution on your devices," Yeo told CNN Philippines.

"This will be the last safety net if you are to click on a suspicious link," he added.

The National Privacy Commission is investigating a surge in text scams that now contain the names of subscribers.

The Senate Committee on Public Services also launched an inquiry on the proliferation of spam and scam text messages on Thursday, Sept. 8.

Yeo said young Filipinos are generally more vulnerable to threats related to data leaks.

He also advised companies handling private data to update their cyber security solutions and softwares that process data back up.

"Companies should know how they could recover in time if they are hit with data breach," Yeo added.
