Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, November 11) – Commuters on EDSA will be able to avail of free rides on the bus carousel 24 hours, seven days a week on Dec. 15 to 31 in anticipation of the Christmas holiday rush, the Department of Transportation announced on Friday.

Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista said the scheme has funds enough for the year.

"'Yung funding kasi, we're only able to get ₱1.4 billion. Palagay namin, 'yung Dec. 15 hanggang 31 can still be accommodated by the existing budget," he said.

In August, the Budget Department released funding for the free rides for the rest of the year.

Budget chief Amenah Pangandaman said the fund will benefit more than 620 public utility buses and help drivers deal with high fuel prices and the COVID-19 pandemic's impact on the transport sector.

The bus carousel operates daily from 4 a.m. to 11 p.m.
