Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, August 10) — The Metro Manila mayors have decided to prohibit outdoor exercises in the capital region during the two-week strict lockdown amid threats of the more transmissible Delta variant.

Nagpasa rin kami ng resolusyon ngayon lang hapon na ultimo paglabas ng bahay maski mag-exercise ay bawal na po sapagkat importante for the next two weeks mapangalagaan ang ating mga taga-Metro Manila,” Metropolitan Manila Development Authority chair Benhur Abalos Jr. said during President Rodrigo Duterte’s taped address.

[Translation: We passed a resolution this afternoon that prohibits going out of your house even for exercise because it is important for the next two weeks to take care of our Metro Manila residents.]

He added that the signed resolution will be released on Tuesday.

The National Capital Region is under the strict enhanced community quarantine until August 20 amid rising COVID-19 cases that may be driven by the feared variant. This means only selected establishments are allowed to operate and movement across the region and beyond is controlled.

Prior to this, some outdoor exercises - like walking around, jogging, and biking - were allowed from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m.

Currently, total COVID-19 infections in country have reached 1,667,714, of which 573,136 are in NCR. The region has 20,470 currently ill patients, 544,229 recoveries, and 8,437 deaths.
