Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, January 27)— The outbreak of the novel coronavirus has prompted several international governments—including Asian countries, the United States, and parts of Europe-- to impose stricter airport security and monitoring policies for visitors.

The Philippine government, for its part, has ramped up measures to keep the respiratory illness at bay— with health officials regularly issuing advisories about the virus.

Experts also urged people to practice good hygiene, as it could help them stay healthy and free from sickness.

Here are some simple tips to help protect yourself from coronavirus and other illnesses:

1. Drink lots of water

Increasing your fluid— particularly water— intake can help keep viruses at bay.

Health Secretary Francisco Duque III told CNN Philippines’ The Source that a dry throat makes it easier for virus to enter one’s system.

2. Clean devices

Filipinos are also advised to wash hands or use alcohol after using their mobile phones—as our devices are also prone to bacteria.

"This is not just limited to the usapin (talks) of the coronavirus… but also microbes,” Duque added

3. Never eat raw meat

Sashimi, however, can be an exception.

4. WUHAN for Wuhan

Here's an easy-to-remember mnemonic, as shared by Dr. Eric Tayag of the Health Department's Knowledge Management and Information Technology Service:

W-ash your hands often.

U-se mask properly and when necessary

H-ave your temperature checked every day for fever, especially if you've just traveled to Wuhan.

A-void large crowds and stay home if you are sick; and

N-ever touch your face with your unclean hands. And as health officials said, no beso-beso, hugs or kisses for now.
