MMDA chairman Francis Tolentino says he will submit his resignation to President Benigno Aquino III in the coming days.

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines) — Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Chairman Francis Tolentino formally announced his 2016 senatorial bid on Tuesday afternoon (September 29).

The event was held at a restaurant in Manila and attended by Cavite local officials, including Gov. Juanito Victor "Jonvic" Remulla, Vice Gov. Ramon "Jolo" Revilla III, and Rep. Lani Mercado.

Prior to becoming chief of the MMDA, Tolentino was mayor of Tagaytay City in the province of Cavite for nine years.

"With that I accept the challenge, with that I accept your endorsement, and hereby declare my candidacy for senator," Tolentino said.

The MMDA chief was set to submit his resignation to the president in the next few days.
