Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, June 4) — Angel Otom, a swimmer who was born without arms, took home the Philippines’ 5th gold medal at the 2023 ASEAN Para Games on Sunday.

The 20-year-old from Olongapo City swam the women’s 50-meter backstroke in 42.63 seconds.

Otom had a lead of 5.24 seconds over the first runner-up, Thailand’s Wilasini Wongnonthapoom, to win the gold.

Wongnonthapoom logged a time of 47.87 seconds to take the silver. Meanwhile, Vietnam’s Danh Thi My Thanh swam the 50m in 1:02.98 to bag the bronze.

In the 2022 edition of the Para Games, Otom took home three gold medals in the women’s 50-meter butterfly, freestyle, and backstroke competitions.
