Gilas' comeback falls short against Jordan in thrilling finish
(CNN Philippines, February 27) — Gilas Pilipinas absorbed a heartbreaking loss to Jordan in a cardiac conclusion, 91-90, in the sixth and final window of the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup Asian qualifiers Monday at the Philippine Arena in Bocaue, Bulacan.
Gilas climbed back from a 25-point deficit in the first half behind the outstanding effort of Justin Brownlee. The naturalized big man erupted for 41 points and 12 rebounds.
The Philippines got the break when Jordan was called for an out of bounds violation with a little over a minute left in the final quarter.
Down by one point, Gilas failed to convert in the end game with Scottie Thompson missing two crucial free throws with 30 seconds remaining, and Ray Parks Jr. failing to make his jump shot on the last possession.
Gilas ended the FIBA World Cup qualifiers with a 6-4 win-loss record in Group E, tying Jordan in the team standings.
Jamie Malonzo added 11 points and five rebounds, while Thompson and Jordan Heading chipped in nine points apiece for the Philippines.
Dar Tucker led Jordan with 22 markers, 12 boards, and two assists.
