Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, July 3) – Filipino pole vault sensation EJ Obiena bagged his sixth gold medal of the year after ruling the Jump and Fly tournament on Sunday (Philippine time) at Heichengen, Germany.

Obiena cleared 5.80 meters in his third and final attempt to produce a bounce-back performance from his sixth place finish at the Stockholm Diamond League last June 30.

The 26-year-old pole vault pride tried to surpass his Asian record of 5.93 meters, but failed to clear the 5.94-meter mark.

Chinese pole vaulter Huang Bokai landed a runner-up finish of 5.50 meters, while German ace Vincent Hobbie finished in third place with 5.10 meters.

Obiena earned his second title this week after setting his new personal season-best mark of 5.92 meters to top the Taby Stavhoppsgala tournament in Sweden.

The other tournaments ruled by Obiena this year were the 31st Southeast Asian Games in Vietnam, European City of Sports event in Italy, Orlen Cup in Poland, and Orlen Copernicus Cup, also in Poland.

The Filipino pole vault star is expected to compete in the 2022 World Athletics Championships from July 15 to 24 in Eugene, Oregon.
