Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, June 22) – The group stage matches of the Philippine women’s football team in the 2022 ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Women’s Championship will be played at the iconic Rizal Memorial Football Stadium in Manila, the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) announced on Wednesday.

“PFF sees to it that we have the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium available to host the AFF Women’s Championship 2022 matches,” said PFF general secretary Atty. Edwin Gastanes. “It is fitting that our FIFA Women’s World Cup-bound Philippine Women’s National Team play at the Rizal Memorial Football Stadium.”

The Filipinas were previously slated to play their group stage matches at the Biñan Football Stadium in Laguna.

The prestigious football competition in Southeast Asia will be the first tournament to be held at the legendary 88-year-old stadium since the 2019 Southeast Asian Games.

“We want to put our best foot forward as our hosting comes at a very exciting time for women’s football in the region with the Philippines and Vietnam qualifying for the FIFA Women’s World Cup early this year along with co-host Australia,” said PFF president Nonong Araneta.

The Rizal Memorial Football Stadium will also host the semifinal and finals matches of the regional tournament scheduled from July 4 to 17.

The Filipinas are grouped with Australia, Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore, and Malaysia in Group A of the 2022 AFF Women’s Championship.

The Philippines will open their campaign against world no. 12 Australia on July 4. The two countries faced off in the 2022 AFC Women’s Asian Cup last January, where the Australians scored a 4-0 demolition of the Filipinas.

The Filipina booters will next battle Singapore on July 6, Malaysia on July 8, Indonesia on July 10, and 2019 AFF Women’s Championship silver medalist Thailand on July 12. All of the five group stage matches of the Filipinas are scheduled at 7 p.m.

Group B of the regional football tournament consists of defending AFF champions Vietnam, Myanmar, Timor Leste, Cambodia, and Laos.

Other group stage matches of the 2022 AFF Women’s Championship will be played at the Biñan Football Stadium and Imus Stadium in Cavite.

The Philippines’ hosting of the tournament came at the heels of the Filipinas’ historic feat of clinching the country’s first ever FIFA Women’s World Cup berth after a semifinal finish in the Asian Cup.

The Filipinas continued to make history last month when they broke the 37-year medal drought of the Philippines in the 31st SEA Games women’s football competition. They beat Myanmar, 2-1, to take home the bronze medal

The Alen Stajcic-mentored Filipinas recently climbed to its highest spot in the FIFA world rankings, sitting at 53rd place.
