Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, June 19) – Filipino tennis sensation Alex Eala achieved on Sunday her maiden runner-up finish in a $60,000 pro circuit tournament.

Eala lost to hometown bet Marina Bassols Ribera in straight sets, 4-6, 5-7, in the women’s singles final of the W60 Madrid meet at the Club Deportivo Brezo Osuna.

In the first set, Eala worked her way to tie the game at four-all but Bassols Ribera unleashed her court savvy in the last two games to notch the match advantage.

The Filipina tennis wunderkind had a blazing start in the second set as she built a 5-0 lead, looking to extend the final match into a deciding third set.

But Bassols Ribera did not want to disappoint fans in her home court, as she set a scorching seven-game rally to win the title and hand Eala a heartbreaking finish.

The 17-year-old Eala beat Bulgaria’s Lia Karatancheva in the first round, Chile’s Daniela Seguel in the second round, hometown bet Yvonne Cavalle Reimers in three sets in the third round, tournament third seed Jaimee Fourlis of Australia in the quarterfinals, and Canada's Katherine Sebov in the semifinals in her amazing run in the W60 Madrid tournament.

Eala holds two professional titles under her belt after she ruled the W15 Manacor meet in January 2021 and the W25 Chiang Rai tourney last April.
