Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, May 25) – Thomas Dooley, the mentor who led the Philippine Azkals to their historic AFC Asian Cup debut in 2018, is making a comeback as the head coach of the national men’s football team.

The Philippine Football Federation (PFF) announced on Wednesday Dooley's re-appointment as the Azkals head coach, a few weeks before the Filipino booters vie for their second straight AFC Asian Cup stint in the final round of the continental tournament’s qualifiers.

“We trust that he can take the team to greater heights in his second stint as head coach. We wish him and the team well as they prepare for the AFC Asian Cup 2023 qualifiers next month,” PFF president Nonong Araneta said.

The American tactician thanked the PFF for re-appointing him to the post, which he held from 2014 to 2018.

“I’m honored to take responsibility to bring the team back where they belong,” said Dooley.

The Azkals will have a training camp in the country from May 26 to June 3, before flying to Mongolia for the final round of the 2023 AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers slated from June 8 to 14.
