Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, May 18) – The Philippine beach volleyball teams had a remarkable outing on Wednesday as they beat host nation Vietnam in their respective matches in the 31st Southeast Asian Games at the Tuan Chau Beach.

The men’s team clinched the top seed in Pool A after they edged the hometown bets, 2-1.

Ranran Abdilla and Jaron Requinton outlasted Nguyen Lam Toi and Trang Quang Vu, 19-21, 21-16, 15-13, in the first match.

But the Vietnamese duo of Nhat Ton Long and Nguyen Van Nha defeated Jude Garcia and Krung Arbasto in a three-set thriller, 21-15, 17-21, 15-12, to force a golden match.

Garcia and Requinton delivered in the crucial match to beat Nhat and Nha, 21-18, 21-15, for the victory.

The Filipino beach spikers swept their three pool play games and will face Pool B runner-up and 2019 silver medalist Thailand in the semifinals on Thursday at 10 a.m. Philippine time.

Meanwhile, the Philippine women’s beach volleyball team also downed the host country, 2-0.

Jovelyn Gonzaga and Dij Rodriguez remained undefeated in four matches as they topped Truong Duong My Huyen and Nguyen Thi Thanh Tram, 21-13, 22-20.

Sisi Rondina and Bernadeth Pons completed the sweep with a 21-16, 21-12 victory over Vu Ngoc Lan Nguyen and Nguyen Le Thi Tuong Vy.

The Filipina beach spikers improved their slate to 3-1 and are tied with Indonesian. The latter holds the tiebreaker in case both squads end in second place.

The Philippines can advance to the gold medal match if they beat Thailand in their final group stage assignment on Thursday at 3:45 p.m. Philippine time, and Indonesia loses to Vietnam.
