Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, May 15) – The Philippine gymnastics team bolstered its claim as the biggest gold medal contributor in the country’s current campaign in the 31st Southeast Asian Games in Vietnam.

So far, the Filipino gymnasts have won five gold medals, three of which came from world gymnastics champion Carlos Yulo.

After defending his SEA Games men’s all-around individual title last Friday, Yulo added two gold medals to his collection after ruling the floor exercise and still rings events on Sunday at the Quan Ngua Sports Palace.

Yulo, who bagged the world title in the men’s floor exercise event in 2019, displayed his world-class form on the mat to finish with a score of 15.200.

Singapore’s Terry Wei-an Tay clinched the silver medal with 14.033 points, while hometown bet Khang Trinh Hai secured the bronze medal after finishing with a score of 14.000.

The 22-year-old Filipino gymnastics star also asserted his might in the still rings apparatus, where he topped the field with a score of 14.400.

The host country settled for the silver and bronze medals, courtesy of Van Khanh Phong Nguyen and Thanh Tung Le, respectively.

Yulo failed to complete a golden treble on Sunday after he finished in sixth place in the men’s pommel horse apparatus.

Filipino gymnasts Jan Gwynn Timbang and John Ivan Cruz also showed their wares in the pommel horse and floor exercise events, respectively.

Meanwhile, Filipino American gymnast Aleah Finnegan won the country’s fifth gold medal in gymnastics after topping the women’s vault table apparatus with a score of 13.133.

Finnegan tallied a close win against silver medalist and hometown bet Thi Quynh Nhu Nguyen, who finished with a score of 13.033. Indonesia’s Rifda Irfanaluthfi snagged the bronze medal with a score of 12.817.

The gold medal win is a followup to her feats on Saturday, where she brought home the gold medal along with five other Filipina gymnasts in the team event and a silver in the all-around individual category.

The former US gymnastics team member almost clinched a podium finish in the women’s uneven bars apparatus, where she ended up in fourth place.

Lucia Gutierrez and Charli Manzano also displayed their skills in the uneven bars and vault table events, respectively.

The Filipino gymnasts seek to win more medals in the final day of the 31st SEA Games artistic gymnastics competitions on Monday, with the staging of the men’s high bar, women’s floor exercise, men’s parallel bars, women’s balance beam, and men’s vault table events.
