Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, May 14) – Gina Iniong and Jean Claude Saclag closed the first day of Team Philippines' campaign in the 31st Southeast Asian Games on Friday with both of them contributing a gold to the country's medal haul.

Both Iniong and Saclag nailed a close 2-1 win against their Thai opponents in the tightly contested battles at the Bac Ninh Gymnasium to increase the country's overall gold medal collection to five.

The two kickboxers also duplicated their finishes in 2019, where Saclag defended his men's low kick -63.5kg division title and Iniong winning the top prize in a heavier weight in the women's low kick -60kg category.

The Philippine kickboxing team marked its 31st SEA Games stint with four silvers from Claudine Veloso, Zephania Ngaya, Renz Dacquel, and Gretel Dela Paz.

The Filipino kickboxers earlier secured bronzes from Honorio Banario and Emmanuel Cantores.

Team Philippines wrapped its first day in the 31st edition of the biennial sports event with an overall medal haul of five golds, 11 silvers, and 11 bronzes, good for fourth place in the 11-nation medal table.
