Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, May 13) – Carlos Yulo continued to flex his reign as the region’s best gymnast after he won the gold and defended his title in the 31st Southeast Asian Games men’s all-around individual event on Friday at the Quan Ngua Sports Palace.

Yulo finished with 85.150 points to win his first gold in this year’s edition of the biennial sports event.

The Japan-trained Yulo edged hometown bet Le Thanh Tung, who scored 84.050 points for a silver medal finish.

Vietnam also secured the bronze medal from Phuong Thanh Dinh after tallying 82.450 points.

Yulo failed to finish with two golds on Friday as he settled for a silver in the men’s team event together with Jan Gwynn Timbang, Juancho Besana, John Ivan Cruz, Justine Ace De Leon, and John Matthew Vergara.

The Yulo-led Philippine gymnastics team recorded 301.60 points for a bridesmaid finish as host country Vietnam ruled the competition with a score of 331.25 points.

Singapore bagged the bronze medal in the men’s team event after it finished with 297.65 points.

Yulo will be back on the mat on Sunday for the men’s pommel horse and floor exercise events. The latter event was where Yulo won the world championship in 2019.
