Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, November 26) — The Ateneo de Manila University secured the top two spot in UAAP Season 85 men's basketball after beating the University of the Philippines, 75-67, Saturday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.

After a subpar performance in the first half, Dave Ildefonso dropped 12 of his 15 points in the third period alongside seven rebounds as Ateneo extended its win streak to five and improved to 10-3 in the team standings.

The victory assured Ateneo of the twice-to-beat bonus in the Final Four and closed the door on National University's quest of landing the top two spot. It also opened the window for the Katipunan-based squad to snatch the top spot with a win against Adamson University on Nov. 30 at the Big Dome.

Angelo Kouame was a steady inside presence for Ateneo, finishing with 14 points and 17 rebounds.

BJ Andrade hit a couple of crucial three-pointers for Ateneo to hold off any comeback attempt by UP in front of more than 14,000 people in attendance.

Ateneo went on a 15-0 run to turn a 49-45 deficit in the third frame to an 11-point lead, 60-49, with over seven minutes left in the final canto.

Carl Tamayo showed the way with 20 markers and 10 boards for UP, which ended its elimination round campaign with an 11-3 slate.
