Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, November 23) — University of the Philippines (UP) handily defeated University of Santo Tomas (UST), 78-60, in UAAP Season 85 Wednesday at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

Carl Tamayo had 19 points and nine rebounds to hand UP the bounce back victory and secure a playoff for a twice-to-beat bonus in the Final Four.

After a close first half, UP pushed the tempo in third quarter to build a 52-39 edge then pulled away for good.

UP continued to pounce on UST with a 15-2 run in the fourth period where it led by as much as 23 points.

The win improved UP's league-leading record to 11-2.

Cyril Gonzales contributed 14 points, while Malick Diouf added 10 points and 14 rebounds for UP.

Nic Cabanero paced UST with 14 markers, seven boards, and three dimes as the Espana-based squad continued to struggle, losing 11 games in 12 outings.

UP will be heading into its crucial game against Ateneo de Manila University on Nov. 26 with an opportunity to secure the top seed at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.

UST, meanwhile, will face Far Eastern University on the same day.
