Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, August 24) – Powerlifter Achelle Guion and three other members of the Philippine delegation tested positive for COVID-19, the Philippine Paralympic Committee confirmed on Tuesday.

Guion, her coach Antonio Taguibao, Team Philippines chef-de-mission Francis Diaz, and para-athletics head coach Joel Deriada contracted the virus.

"Jinky is deeply frustrated that she will not be able to compete in her powerlifting event for her country after training for so long and especially getting much inspiration from Hidilyn Diaz, a powerlifter like herself and the first Filipino to win an Olympic gold medal," PPC President Michael Barredo said in a statement.

The 49-year-old Guion is supposed to compete in the women's -45kg division final on Thursday.

The PPC assured Guion and Taguibao are asymptomatic and in good health. The two were also unable to join the Philippine delegation which left for Tokyo last Sunday.

The national sports association for Filipino athletes with disabilities earlier announced that one of the six Filipino Tokyo Paralympians tested positive for the virus.

The opening ceremony of the Tokyo Paralympics is scheduled at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
