Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, April 11) — Figure skater Michael Christian Martinez has taken to social media on Sunday to raise funds for his bid to qualify for the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, China.

Martinez launched a GoFundMe campaign called “Michael Martinez - Road to 2022 Winter Olympics” with a goal to raise $49,320, which will help him finance his training.

“My team and I have organized a fundraising campaign called 'Michael Martinez - Road to 2022 Winter Olympics' to help out with the training expenses for the reason I currently don’t have sponsors yet,” the 24-year-old figure skater wrote in his Facebook post.

Currently training in the US under Russian coach Nikolai Morozov, Maritinez hopes to bring honor and recognition once again to the Philippines.

Martinez is looking to clinch an Olympic slot as he competes at the 2021 Nebelhorn Trophy on September 22-25 in Germany.

The two-time Olympian, who is also the first Southeast Asian figure skater to participate in the Olympic games, was the country's lone delegate to the 2014 and 2018 Winter Olympic games in Sochi, Russia and Pyeongchang, South Korea, respectively.
