Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, October 23)— Filipino gymnast Carlos Yulo failed to defend his world title, missing a podium finish in the men's floor exercise final at the 2021 Artistic Gymnastics World Championships Saturday in Japan.

Yulo placed fifth with a score of 14.566. He tallied 8.266 for execution and 6.600 for difficulty, but was slapped with a 0.3 penalty for landing out of bounds during the routine.

Italy's Nicola Bartolini grabbed the gold while Japan's Minami Kazuki and Finland's Emil Soravuo took home the silver and bronze medals, respectively.

Yulo, the reigning world champion in floor exercise, made history in 2019 after capturing the Philippines' first ever gold in the world championships.

He still has two shots for gold as he competes in the finals of vault and parallel bars on Sunday.
