Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, January 13) – The Philippine Olympic Committee tapped commissioner Ramon Fernandez of the Philippine Sports Commission as the country’s chef-de-mission for the 2021 Southeast Asian Games.

The appointment of Fernandez was formalized during the first POC executive board meeting for the year on Tuesday in Pasay City.

Fernandez, a decorated basketball player who won 19 titles in the Philippine Basketball Association and had been part of the national team, will work closely with the Southeast Asian Games Federation and the 10 other participating nations for the staging of the 31st edition of the Games.

Fernandez has a tough task of leading the Filipinos’ overall title defense in the biennial regional sports competition slated in November at Hanoi, Vietnam.

The Philippines won 149 golds, 117 silvers, and 121 bronzes in the 2019 SEAG at home to win its second overall championship in games history, after getting its maiden title in 2005 also in front of their countrymen.
