Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, July 17) – Philander Rodman Jr., father of NBA legend Dennis Rodman, succumbs to prostate cancer on Tuesday in Pampanga. He was 79.

Philander’s granddaughter Jasmine confirmed his death in a Facebook post.

Darling Marie, one of Philander’s daughters, created a Twitter account so that it can reach Dennis and help them pay the Rodman patriarch’s outstanding hospital fees. She also set up a GoFundMe account for this.

Philander was an enlisted member of the United States Air Force and fought in the Vietnam War.

He settled in the Philippines in the 1970s, leaving behind Dennis’ mother in the US.

In his stay in the country, Philander became a burger joint owner in Pampanga and reportedly fathered around 29 children through 16 women.

Dennis expressed his disgust with his father in his 1996 book "Bad As I Wanna Be," saying his disappearance contributed to their family’s struggles.

When Dennis first visited in Manila in 2006, he turned down Philander’s request for a personal meeting.

But in 2012, upon Dennis’ return in Manila for the All-Star Basketball Challenge event, the father and son had a quick talk. The former Chicago Bulls forward also recognized Philander in front of the Mall of Asia Arena crowd.
