Magnitude 5.7 quake jolts Davao Oriental

Metro Manila (April 21, CNN Philippines) — A magnitude 5.7 earthquake struck Tarragona, Davao Oriental early Thursday, state seismologists reported, noting aftershocks were expected.

In an earthquake bulletin, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the tremor struck 136 kilometers east of Manay at 5:41 a.m. It had a depth of 96 kilometers and was tectonic in origin.

No damage was expected.

Intensity 2, or a tremor "slightly felt", was recorded in General Santos City.

Instrumental intensities were also recorded in the following areas: Intensity 3 or a "weak" tremor in Malungon and Alabel Sarangani; Intensity 2 in Nabunturan, Davao de Oro; Davao City; Tupi, South Cotabato; and Koronadal City; and Intensity 1 or "scarcely perceptible" tremor in Malaybalay, Bukidnon; Kidapawan City; Kiamba, Sarangani; and Santo Niño and T'boli, South Cotabato.

A slightly weaker magnitude 5.2 quake also hit Tarragona at 4:16 a.m. This was an aftershock of a magnitude 5.5 quake that struck the area on April 20, Phivolcs said.
