Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, December 6) — Two mayors from Basilan province were shot by four gunmen in Zamboanga City on Monday morning, killing one while injuring the other.

According to an initial report received by the Philippine National Police, Akbar Mayor Alih Awal Sali, Al-Barka Mayor Darussalam Saguindilan Lajid, and driver Barad Nuruddin were attacked at 8:31 a.m. in Barangay Baliwasan.

“The suspects fled after the commission of the crime with motorized boat and one white car as their (getaway) vehicles,” the PNP said in a statement.

The police said the two mayors and the driver were rushed to the hospital after sustaining gunshot wounds, but Lajid and Nurrudin were declared dead on arrival.

PNP chief Gen. Dionardo Carlos said he had already directed PNP Area Commander for Western Mindanao Lt. Gen. Chiquito Malayo to coordinate pursuit operations against the suspects.
