CNN Philippines (CNN Philippines, June 12) — Northern Samar recently recorded its biggest single-day increase in COVID-19 cases after a Church concert was held in one of its municipalities, Governor Edwin Ongchuan said Saturday.

Based sa aming contact tracing, nagkaroon po ng tinatawag nilang Church concert," Ongchuan said in a media briefing when asked what might have contributed to the spike in infections in their province. Northern Samar reported only six new infections on June 9.

Northern Samar so far has 239 active cases, according to the local government.

Ongchuan said he has prohibited mass gatherings, adding lockdowns were imposed in a number of areas to stop the coronavirus from spreading further.

Governors in Eastern Visayas have asked the Inter-Agency Task Force to place the region under a stricter general community quarantine due to rising infections.
