Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, October 8) — An Abu Sayyaf member was killed while another one was arrested in a firefight in Talipao town, Sulu, according to the military.

The Western Mindanao Command in a statement on Monday said the remains of the "terrorist" was retrieved after a 20-minute clash Sunday afternoon. Government forces fought with around 30 Abu Sayyaf members, the military said. Firearms and explosives were recovered from the jungle where the encounter happened.

The group left behind a wounded female member identified as Nursaina Jarad Sahi, wife of an Abu Sayyaf fighter. She was brought to the hospital after sustaining shrapnel wounds, the military said.

“It is unfortunate that Abu Sayyaf terrorists continue to endanger the lives of their own family and friends, like Ms. Nursaina. I feel sorry for her that she was abandoned, wounded and helpless during the firefight,” Maj. Gen. Corleto Vinluan, Jr., commander of Joint Task Force Sulu said in a statement.

He said Sahi's family has been notified about her condition.

The Abu Sayyaf group is notorious for kidnap-for-ransom activities and bombings. President Rodrigo Duterte had ordered government forces to destroy the group, which has factions that are known to have pledged allegiance to international terrorist network ISIS.
