Barangay chief shot dead in Batangas

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, September 5)- A barangay chairman vying for reelection in Taal, Batangas was shot dead early Tuesday morning, local authorities said.

Barangay Chairman Erasmo “Resty” Divino Hernandez, an incumbent and reelectionist in the 2023 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (BSKE) election in Taal's Zone 10, was fatally shot by two gunmen riding-in-tandem on a motorcycle.

The Taal Municipal Police Station said the assailants shot Hernandez seven times in front of the barangay hall. The Police got the report at around 7:30 am.

Police said Hernandez was declared dead on arrival at the Lemery Doctors Medical Center.

Investigation is ongoing to identify the assailants and their motive for the killing.
