Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, March 23) — A magnitude 5.7 earthquake struck the waters off Dalupiri Island in Cagayan on Thursday morning, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

It was recorded at 7:32 a.m., and Phivolcs warned that aftershocks are expected although damage from the tremor is unlikely.

The agency also noted the following instrumental intensities in Cagayan and nearby areas:

Intensity III (“weak” shaking) – Pasuquin, Ilocos Norte; San Antonio, Zambales

Intensity II (“slightly felt” shaking) – Laoag City, Ilocos Norte; Narvacan, Ilocos Sur; Ilagan, Isabela;

Intensity I (“slightly perceptible” shaking) – Penablanca and Gonzaga, Cagayan; Batac, Ilocos Norte; Sinait, Ilocos Sur; Santol, La Union

Based on the Phivolcs bulletin, the earthquake was tectonic in origin — or there was a movement in the Earth's crust — with a depth of 43 kilometers.
