Separate quakes hit Maguindanao, waters off Antique

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, August 13) - A magnitude 5.9 earthquake hit a Maguindanao town Saturday afternoon, a couple of hours after a magnitude 5.1 tremor struck in the waters off Anini-y town in Antique, state seismologists reported.

The epicenter of the magnitude 5.9 quake, which occurred at 2:25 p.m., was located 31 kilometers southwest of the municipality of Datu Blah T. Sinsuat, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

Its advisory listed the following reported intensities:

Intensity V (strong) - Datu Blah T. Sinsuat, South Upi, and Upi, Maguindanao; Cotabato City; Esperanza, Lebak, Palimbang, Kalamansig, Sen. Ninoy Aquino, and Bagumbayan, Sultan Kudarat;

Intensity IV (moderately strong) - General Santos City; Zamboanga City; Pagadian City; Isabela City, Basilan; Antipas, Alamada, Tulunan, Pigcawayan, Kabacan, and Banisilan, Cotabato; Koronadal City, Tupi, Polomolok, Santo Niño, Surallah, Tampakan and Banga, South Cotabato; Kiamba and Maitum, Sarangani; Lutayan and Isulan, Sultan Kudarat; Datu Odin Sinsuat and Sultan Kudarat, Maguindanao;

Intensity III (weak) - Ozamiz City; M'lang, Makilala, and Tantangan, Cotabato; Norala, South Cotabato; Pres. Quirino and Columbio, Sultan Kudarat; Maasim, Sarangani; Pitogo and Labangan, Zamboanga del Sur; Liloy, Zamboanga del Norte; Siay, Zamboanga Sibugay;

Intensity II (slightly felt) - Dipolog City; Cagayan de Oro City; Davao City; Kidapawan City; El Salvador City; Aleosan, Cotabato; Don Carlos, Cabanglasan, and Valencia City, Bukidnon; Malapatan and Malungon, Sarangani; Lambayong, Sultan Kudarat; Leon B. Postigo, Siayan, Sindangan, Gutalac, Tampilisan, Zamboanga del Norte; Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay; Tubod, Lenamon, Balo-i, Kauswagan, Bacolod, Maigo, Lala, Kapatagan and Iligan City, Lanao del Norte;

Intensity I (scarcely perceptible) - Dapitan City; Malitbog and Libona, Bukidnon; Initao, Misamis Oriental.

Phivolcs also noted these instrumental intensities:

Intensity IV - T'boli, Surallah, Tupi, Santo Niño, Koronadal City, South Cotabato; Kiamba, Sarangani;

Intensity III - Glan, Maasim, and Alabel, Sarangani; Zamboanga City; Columbio and Isulan, Sultan Kudarat;

Intensity II - Kidapawan City; Cagayan de Oro, Misamis Oriental; Malaybalay, Bukidnon;

Intensity I - Davao City; Nabunturan, Davao de Oro; Gingoog City, Misamis Oriental;

The agency initially reported the magnitude at 5.8, and the epicenter to be 11 kilometers northwest of South Upi town.

Antique quake

The magnitude 5.1 quake in waters off Antique, meanwhile, happened at 12:25 p.m., Phivolcs said. The epicenter was located 20 kilometers southwest of the municipality of Anini-y.

The following were the reported intensities:

Intensity 4 - Anini-y, Tobias Fornier, and San Jose de Buenavista, Antique;

Intensity 3 - Belison, and Sibalom, Antique; Iloilo City;

Intensity 2 - Bugasong, Barbaza, and Patnongon, Antique;

The advisory also listed these instrumental intensities:

Intensity 4 - Anini-y, Antique;

Intensity 2 - Iloilo City; San Jose de Buenavista, Antique;

Intensity 1 - Sebaste, Antique; Sipalay City, Negros Occidental; Tapaz, Capiz

Phivolcs initially pegged the Anini-y quake at magnitude 4.8. It was followed by two more tremors--magnitude 3.4 at 12:27 p.m. and magnitude 3.5 at 12:30 p.m.

Seismologists said aftershocks are expected for both quakes.

They added both tremors were tectonic in origin, which means these were caused by the movement in the Earth's crust. The one in Maguindanao had a depth of one kilometer, while the one in Anini-y had a depth of six kilometers.
