Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, July 1) – Commuters can continue to enjoy the free EDSA Bus Carousel rides until the end of the year while students not need pay to board select train lines starting in August.

President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. approved on Friday the extension of free rides in the EDSA Bus Carousel until December 2022, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) said.

The new administration also gave its nod to free rides for students who will use the MRT-3, LRT-2, and PNR when face-to-face classes resume in August.

The two big programs to ease the burden of commuters in the second half of the year were stipulated in a memorandum the DOTr submitted to Marcos.

Marcos gave his approval following his recent meeting with DOTr Secretary Jaime Bautista, and Executive Secretary Vic Rodriguez, the DOTr press statement said.

Meanwhile, the DOTr added it recommended that the free rides for all MRT-3 passengers be discontinued because fares on the train line are already heavily subsidzed by the government.

The free MRT-3 rides ended on Thursday, the last day of the Duterte administration and the first day of the Marcos government.
