Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, June 28) — Detained senator Leila De Lima on Monday said she is recovering after undergoing a major surgery at the Manila Doctors Hospital last week.

“Discharged from the hospital yesterday. Still recovering from a major surgery. Still experiencing some pains but I feel generally fine,” she said in a statement.

She also thanked those who prayed for her.

Two Muntinlupa courts granted De Lima’s request for medical furlough.

Muntinlupa Regional Trial Court Branch 204 said that “during her medical checkup last 05 April 2022, in one of the routine checkups of her OB-GYN, Dra. Aida Bautista, she was diagnosed with Pelvic Organ Prolapse Stage 3 and was advised to undergo Vaginal Hysterectomy with Anterior and Posterior Colporrhany at the soonest possible time.”

De Lima said her doctors cleared her for discharge, but was told to avoid strenuous and heavy physical activities.

Last year, the senator was allowed to leave jail for three days after having a suspected mild stroke. She was also granted a one-day medical furlough for her routine checkup.

The 62-year-old lawmaker has been detained since 2017 due to drug-related charges, which she has described as trumped up. She lost her reelection bid in the 2022 polls.
