Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, May 6) – Vice presidential candidate Rizalito David, running mate of Jose Montemayor Jr., publicly declared his support for another presidential hopeful, Vice President Leni Robredo.

David made the endorsement in a PiliPinas Forum 2022 interview aired on Friday, saying he believes helping Robredo win is a way to prevent the return of another Marcos to Malacañang.

He was with Montemayor during the interview, which was organized by the Commission on Elections and the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas.

“Sa aking pragmatic reasons, dahil ang aking layunin ngayon ay sana 'wag manalo si Bongbong Marcos at si Sara Duterte….tahasan ko na pong ine-endorso, with respect to my ka-tandem na si Dr. Montemayor, na si Leni Robredo po ang ating tulungan upang baka sakali naman ay talunin niya si Bongbong Marcos,” he said.

[Translation: For pragmatic reasons, because my goal now is to prevent Bongbong Marcos and Sara Duterte from winning, I am openly endorsing Leni Robredo, with respect to my running mate Dr. Montemayor. Let’s help Robredo in hopefully beating Bongbong Marcos.]

The vice presidential bet, an advocate of faith-based governance, noted several religious leaders across the country have already thrown their support behind Robredo.

He also urged voters to be discerning and called survey frontrunners Marcos and Duterte a “clear and present danger” to the country.

Just last week, David also endorsed his rival candidate Senate President Tito Sotto III. Still, he has not withdrawn his election bid.

The latest Pulse Asia preference survey released earlier this week showed Marcos was still leading with a 56% rating, followed by Robredo with 23%.

For vice presidential bets, Duterte took the lead with 55%, while Sotto was in the second spot with 18%.

Both Montemayor and David ranked last among their rivals.
