Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, May 24) — The Commission on Elections (Comelec) reiterated Tuesday that the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections will proceed by December, with planning to begin by next month.

If in case the postponement will be approved by Congress and signed by the president, Garcia said the Comelec will obey. This was echoed by the commission’s acting spokesperson Rex Laudiangco in a separate Comelec briefing held on the same day.

“Comelec will continue with its preparations until such time there is a republic act promulgated, issued at napirmahan [and signed] stating that the barangay elections is postponed or reset or rescheduled,” Laudiangco said.

As part of the preparations, Garcia said voter registration will resume by July. The commission will also start looking for election paraphernalia to be used.

Meanwhile, Garcia clarifies that the Comelec has not received the budget for the barangay polls, following reports that funds have been used already.

Wala pa po kaming kinukuha ni singkong duling dyan po sa ating DBM (Department of Budget and Management) patungkol sa paghahanda sa barangay elections,” he said.
