Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, May 22) — A dead sperm whale was found along the shores of Sitio Sakalig in Jose Abad Santos, Davao Occidental on Saturday, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources said on Sunday.

In a statement, the DENR said two fishermen discovered the carcass and reported it to authorities.

“With a measurement of 60 feet in length and 9 feet in width, the carcass of the said sperm whale was observed to have multiple wounds. It was also said that most likely, it was already lifeless when it reached the shores of Sitio Sakalig,” the DENR added.

DENR Region 11 Executive Director Bagani Fidel Evasco instructed the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office Davao Occidental to coordinate with marine biology experts.

"There is also a need to cordon the area. And the carcass should be disposed immediately because its smell can be toxic and hazardous to the community,” he added.

Citing the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office, the DENR said the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office and the Davao Museum will conduct a deboning on Sunday.
