Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, May 18) — The rainy season officially started in the country on Wednesday, state weather bureau Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said.

The agency announced this in a statement after recording the presence of frontal system and severe thunderstorms recently.

"Moreover, southwesterly windflow was also observed during the past few days. This satisfies the criteria of the start of the rainy season over the western sections of Luzon and Visayas," it said.

"Intermittent rains, associated with the Southwest (SW) monsoon will start to affect Metro Manila and the western sections of the country," PAGASA added.

Monsoon breaks may still occur for several days or weeks, it said.

The agency added it will continue to monitor the day-to-day weather and long-term climate situation as well as provide updates when significant changes occur.
