Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, May 13)— One inmate was killed, while nine others were injured in a riot that erupted at the Quezon City Jail on Friday, authorities said.

An initial report from the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) said a “commotion” among the detainees broke out at the prison’s male dormitory in the afternoon. No further details were provided on what caused the riot.

BJMP said the wounded persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) were rushed to a nearby medical center for treatment.

Investigation on the case is underway, it added.

In a statement on Friday evening, Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte has ordered the Quezon City Police District (QCPD) and the BJMP to conduct a thorough investigation of the incident.

Belmonte also underscored the need for the BJMP to revisit its security protocols to avoid such incidents from happening again.

According to a report to QCPD Director PBGen Remus Medina and PLtCol Alex DJ Alberto, Station Commander of the QCPD Station 10, the riot was between members of two gangs in the city jail, namely the Batang City Jail, Commando and Bahala na Gang. The incident occurred at around 3 p.m. and was pacified at around 4:30 p.m.

This is a breaking story.
