Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, November 24) — Authorities confiscated smuggled yellow onions worth ₱225,000 in separate operations, the Department of Agriculture said Thursday.

Seized last Nov. 18 in Divisoria, Mutya ng Pasig and Balintawak, Quezon City, the 105 sacks of smuggled onions weighed a total of 44 kilograms.

According to James Layug of the Department of Agriculture, the operations were jointly conducted by the Philippine Cost Guard and the Philippine National Police, which confiscated the smuggled goods.

"We will continue to work with other agencies of the government to protect the livelihood of our farmers and fishers," Layug said.

Last Nov. 5, AGRI Party-List Rep. Wilbert Lee filed a bill seeking stricter punishment for all those involved in agricultural smuggling, including public officials and employees.
