Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, January 5) — The country’s ₱20 new generation currency (NGC) coin is among the finalists in one of the categories of this year’s International Currency Awards, the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas said.

“The 20-Piso New Generation Currency (NGC) coin has emerged as a finalist for the ‘Best New Coin or Series Category: Excellence in Currency 2022 Awards’ of the International Association of Currency Affairs (IACA),” said the BSP on Tuesday.

The bi-color ₱20 coin, which features the country’s first Commonwealth president Manuel L. Quezon similar to its bill counterpart, is up against Mexico’s 20-peso commemorative coin and Kazakhstan’s 200 tenge.

The association picked the finalists from 39 nominated projects initiated by teams hailing from 20 central banks, nine banknote industry suppliers, three commercial banknote issuers, and one banknote distribution system organization, added the central bank.

Winners will be unveiled this Feb. 22.

The IACA is an organization that aims to provide “international exchange for consultation and collaboration on matters of interest to stakeholders in the cash payments cycle,” its website says.

It is made up of central banks, currency issuing authorities, finance ministries, state and commercial printworks, state and commercial mints, cash management companies, currency industry suppliers, and cash handling suppliers.
