Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, January 28)— Former Bayan Muna congressman Neri Colmenares is the latest addition to the senatorial ticket of opposition coalition 1Sambayan.

Colmenares himself confirmed the endorsement during a virtual event held Friday.

"Isang malaking karangalan sa akin na mapili bilang isa sa mga senatorial candidates ng 1Sambayan. Malugod ko pong tinatanggap ang karangalang ito," Colmenares said.

[Translation: It's a huge honor to be chosen as one of the senatorial candidates of 1Sambayan. I gladly welcome this development.]

Colmenares joins seven others in 1Sambayan's lineup: Senator Risa Hontiveros, detained Senator Leila de Lima, former Senator Antonio Trillanes IV, human rights lawyer Chel Diokno, former Baguio Rep. Teddy Baguilat, lawyer Alex Lacson, and labor leader Sonny Matula.

Group co-convenor Atty. Howard Calleja earlier said the list is "ongoing" and that they are "still open for others" to join the ticket.

In the same event, Colmenares announced the Makabayan coalition would be backing presidential hopeful Vice President Leni Robredo and her running mate Senator Kiko Pangilinan for the May elections.

He cited the tandem's similar positions with regards to the COVID-19 pandemic response, policies for workers, farmers and other sectors, as well as on issues concerning the environment and the West Philippine Sea.

Colmenares failed to make the cut in Robredo's personal Senate slate announced last year, but the Vice President had said the progressive leader was among those considered for a spot in the lineup.
