Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, September 21) — As the country marked the 49th anniversary of martial law declaration, Vice President Leni Robredo reminded Filipinos of the sufferings during the regime of Ferdinand Marcos, and urged them to resist attempts to revise accounts of his dictatorship.

"Kailangan nating ulit-ulitin, sa bawat pagkakataon, ang katotohanan: Sa ilalim ng rehimeng Marcos, nagdusa ang Pilipino," Robredo said on Tuesday.

[Translation: We need to repeat the truth on every occasion: Under the Marcos regime, Filipinos suffered.]

Around 70,000 people were imprisoned, 30,000 tortured, and more than 3,000 killed during martial law from 1972 to 1981, according to international human rights group Amnesty International.

"Isa ito sa pinakaimportanteng trabaho natin bilang mamamayang Pilipino: Ang bantayan, igiit, at idiin ang pag-ukit sa kasaysayan ng tunay na kuwento ng sambayanang Pilipino," Robredo said.

[Translation: One of our most important duties as Filipinos is to safeguard and insist on the true history of the Filipino nation.]

"Diktador si Marcos, at hindi niya napagbayaran nang husto ang krimen niya; katunayan, patuloy ang pagpapakasasa ng kanyang angkan sa kayamanang ninakaw niya mula sa atin," she added.

[Translation: Marcos was a dictator, and he was not able to completely pay for his crimes. In fact, his family continues to enjoy wealth stolen from our country's coffers.]

The Marcos family has faced accusations of historical revisionism. Former senator Bongbong Marcos said the accounts of his father's regime depict "political propaganda".

Marcos, who assumed power on Dec. 30, 1965, placed the Philippines under martial law on Sept. 21, 1972. He lifted martial law in 1981, but his reign continued until he was ousted by the 1986 People Power revolt.
