Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, September 14)— Senators on Tuesday adopted a resolution urging the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to extend the deadline for voter registration until the end of October.

The registration period is set to wrap up by Sept. 30.

Several groups and lawmakers have appealed for the extension as some areas in the country halted processing due to COVID-19 quarantine restrictions.

But Comelec rejected the calls, saying such a move may result in delays in the preparations for the 2022 national elections. The poll body said it would instead make modifications to accommodate those who want to cast their ballots next year.

The commission implemented longer voter registration hours in late August. Earlier this month, it also approved registration activities in areas under the modified enhanced community quarantine.
