Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, June 19) — Vice President Leni Robredo urged Filipinos to follow in national hero Jose Rizal's footsteps, by defending what is right and by becoming a source of hope in the middle of adversity.

On Rizal's 160th birth anniversary, Robredo shared a quote from Rizal's La Solidaridad in 1890: "Let the Filipino people, without losing trust in men, place their confidence on something higher, on one with better memory, on one who knows better the value of justice and a sacred promise."

[Translation: We are called to be a source of hope and to respond to the challenges of our time - to solve the pandemic, to rise from poverty, to protect our dignity and human rights.]

Robredo also said she hopes Rizal would continue to be a model for the Filipino youth.

[Translation: May Rizal become an example to the new generation of Filipinos so that they will fight for what is right and fair, and may he be a hero who reflects the highest of principles and ambitions for our nation.]
