Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, May 6) - The Department of Education has extended the early enrollment for school year 2021-2022 until May 31, according to Education Undersecretary Jesus Mateo.

The extension will give parents more time to register their children, Mateo said in a statement.

Around 4.3 million students in Kindergarten, Grades 1, 7, and 11 have already registered for the upcoming school year. The DepEd launched the early enrollment last March 26. It initially ended on April 30.

As of May 6, Calabarzon recorded the highest number of registered learners with 437,561. It was followed by Central Visayas with 395,830 and Western Visayas with 365,361.

"We are very happy with the outcome of our early registration. It surpasses our expectations when it comes to the number of learners and parents willing to start or continue their studies," Education Secretary Leonor Briones said.

"Amidst the current situation, this only shows how important education is to our stakeholders," she added.

With the ongoing pandemic, the DepEd has conducted the early enrollment using online chat, text messaging, and drop boxes in schools or in barangays.

The DepEd is also considering to open classes in September.
