Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, October 2) — Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte is seeking to stay in local government after filing her candidacy for reelection, her spokesperson said.

"I can confirm that Mayor Sara Duterte has filed her Certificate of Candidacy for Mayor of Davao City," Liloan, Cebu Mayor Christina Garcia Frasco said on Saturday.

In a Facebook post, President Rodrigo Duterte's daughter — a frontrunner in most pre-election surveys — also shared photos of her filing her COC.

Almost a month ago, Sara said she would not run for the country's top post after his father formally accepted the endorsement of a faction within the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) to be its vice presidential candidate.

Duterte, however, announced on Saturday his retirement from politics.

"In obedience to the will of the people, I now say sa mga kababayan ko, sundin ko ang gusto ninyo (to my countrymen, I will follow what you want). Today, I announce my retirement from politics," Duterte said in a short message at the Harbor Garden Tent of the Sofitel Manila Hotel in Pasay City.

The President accompanied his long-time aide Sen. Bong Go who replaced him as the vice presidential bet of Cusi-led wing of the ruling PDP-Laban party.
