Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, August 6) — The country has received tablets of an anti-flu drug from Japan that can potentially cure the coronavirus disease, the Japanese Embassy said on Thursday.

"The Government of Japan delivered Avigan tablets for 100 patients to the Philippine Department of Health" said the embassy in a statement.

This is to fulfill Japan's earlier commitment to provide the drug to the country as well as 19 others for free, it said.

The arrival of the medicine is also part of the Department of Health's plan to conduct a trial on coronavirus patients to see Avigan's effectiveness. President Rodrigo Duterte earlier said the study was given a budget of ₱18 million.
