Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, July 20) - A cybersecurity expert said Monday that offers to buy fan pages of celebrities could be a strategy ahead of the 2022 general elections

“There are troll operators right now who might be preparing already for the next election. Whoever has the most number of followers in fan pages, they could probably get a huge amount of payment also, every time they post something on a specific candidate,” said Angel Rodable in an interview with CNN Philippines’ News.PH.

Actress Bea Alonzo said on Sunday that some of her supporters, who also manage the fan pages, were offered by unknown persons to buy their accounts.

Fan pages of other celebrities were also reported to have received similar offers.

Redoble said buying fan pages with a large number of followers is an easier way to spread information.

“If you are into business and you want to tell everyone about your product and services, with just one post in a fan page, then you can disseminate your products,” he said.

“Buying a fan page, will immediately, if you want to disseminate something whether true or fake, you can do that in one post in a fan page,” he added.

Redoble also said the scheme could be also used to hack information.

“It can be used to victimize people through phishing attacks, it is mimicking websites like banks, retails, and even COVID-related,” he said. “You can post that in fan page, immediately even 100 percent of people in that fan page might click on your malicious website. You can steal their information.”

In June, there were reports of a surge in empty and duplicate Facebook accounts and were feared that they can be used to spread false information.
