Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, June 30) — The Department of Health said on Tuesday that some areas in the southern Philippines are now developing into COVID-19 hotspots.

In a media forum, Health spokesperson Maria Rosario Vergeire identified the following areas being closely watched by authorities as ‘emerging COVID-19 hotspots’:

Northern Mindanao

Bukidnon

Lanao del Norte

Misamis Occidental

Davao Region

Davao del Norte

Davao del Sur

Davao Oriental

Soccsksargen

South Cotabato

Sultan Kudarat

Bangsamoro Autonomous Region

Maguindanao

“We’d like to focus and monitor these areas kasi titingnan natin bakit antagal na panahon walang kaso, biglang may kaso ngayon?” Vergeire asked.

[Translation: We would like to focus and monitor these areas to figure out why they recorded a case after being COVID-19 free for so long.]

A COVID-19 hotspot refers to a place which recorded at least one confirmed case after being virus-free, Vergeire explained.

“Kahit isang kaso lang lumabas in a place where there is no previously identified confirmed case, hotspot ka na.”

[Translation: Even if there is only one case in a place where there is no previously identified confirmed case, you are considered a hotspot.]

A hotspot could also mean an area which already has COVID-19 cases suddenly recording a ‘significant’ increase in infections, Vergeire said.
