Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, May 7) — Vitamins and mineral supplements are now included in senior citizens' 20 percent discount for health-related products, the Department of Health announced on Thursday.

The agency said it has amended the guidelines on the discount and value-added tax exemption which initially did not include vitamins among applicable "medicines."

"Pwede na po kayo bumili ng vitamins at mineral supplements na may 20 percent discount basta po may kasamang riseta," Health Spokesperson Ma. Rosario Vergeire told senior citizens in the department's daily online briefing.

The new discount will be available 30 days after publication of the administrative order, she added.

Elderly rights advocate Romulo Macalintal said he appealed for the inclusion last month. He lauded the agency for granting the discount.

"I'm happy to report to my fellow senior citizens that our appeal to Department of Health to grant us 20% discount and VAT exemption for the purchase of vitamins and mineral supplements has been approved by the DOH...Congratulations seniors," he said on Facebook.
