Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, April 7) — Quezon City on Tuesday ordered the mandatory wearing of face masks and similar improvised covers for those who go out of their homes.

Mayor Joy Belmonte issued an executive order heeding the call of the Interior Department for local governments in Luzon to sign ordinances penalizing those who do not wear masks to help stop the spread of COVID-19.

She said city enforcers will distribute masks to those who don't have masks so residents can comply with the order.

The Quezon City Police District, all barangay officials, and other officials will enforce the order. Those who violate will be penalized with a fine of up to ₱50,000 and/or imprisonment of up to six months.

Quezon City has a total of 583 confirmed cases of COVID-19 as of Monday.
